Sarah was born in March 1867 in Rawtenstall.1  Sarah's father was John Cunliffe and her mother was Jane Hargreaves.  Her paternal grandparents were George Cunliffe and Bathsheba Cunliffe. She had three sisters named Hannah, Elizabeth and Bathsheba.  She was the youngest of the four known children.
