Harriet was born in December 1838 in Barnsley.1  Harriet's father was John Crosland and her mother was Ann (Nanny) Townend.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Ann Darwent. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Robert, John, Fred, Job, Albert, Sam, Everett, Arthur, Hannah, Emma and Eliza.  She was the third oldest of the thirteen known children.
