Elizabeth, known as Eliza, was born in June 1847 in Barnsley.1  Eliza's father was John Crosland and her mother was Ann (Nanny) Townend.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Ann Darwent. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Robert, John, Fred, Job, Albert, Sam, Everett, Arthur, Harriet, Hannah and Emma.  She was the seventh oldest of the thirteen known children.
