Joseph's father was Jacob Crook and his mother was Jane Robinson. His paternal grandparents were John Crook and Ann Tommason. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Edward, James, Thomas, Ann, Sarah, Rachel, Martha and Martha. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
