John's father was William Crook and his mother was Betty Nelson.  His paternal grandparents were William Crook and Alice Aldred. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Andrew, Alexander, James, Johanna, Alice, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 88 on March 4th, 1891 in California (CA).  He was buried.²
