William's father was John Buckley and his mother was Hannah Lees.  His paternal grandparents were James Buckley Snr and Elisabeth (Betty) Cresswell. He had three sisters named Mary, Betty and Sally.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Ann.
