John was born in 1769 in Saddleworth and his baptism took place on September 3rd, 1769 at St. Chad (Saddleworth).1  John's father was James Buckley Jnr and his mother was Margaret Platt.  His paternal grandparents were James Buckley Snr and Elisabeth (Betty) Cresswell. He had a brother and six sisters, named James, Mary, Betty, Sarah, Ann, Alice and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
