Betty's father was James Buckley Jnr and her mother was Margaret Platt.  Her paternal grandparents were James Buckley Snr and Elisabeth (Betty) Cresswell. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Alice and Hannah.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
