Ellen was born in 1814.  Ellen's father was Ralph Brereton and her mother was Alice Owen.  Her paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Martha Jennion. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Ralph, Martha, Ann, Mary, Esther, Elizabeth and Sarah.  She was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
