Thomas was born in 1847.  Thomas' father was Joseph Blackburn and his mother was Ruth Berry.  His paternal grandparents were Michael Blackburn and Hannah Eastwood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Luke, Edwin, George and Hannah.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
