Herbert was born in 1887 in Connah's Quay.¹ Herbert's father was Joseph Bennett and his mother was Catherine Davies. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Mary Hewitt. He had two sisters named Priscilla and Martha. He was the second oldest of the three children.
