Martha was born in September 1862 in Malpas and her christening took place there on September 7th, 1862.1 2  Martha's father was Charles Batho and her mother was Emma Sudlow.  Her paternal grandparents were George Batho and Martha Cartwright. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Charles, George, William and Mary.  Mary and Martha were twins. She had a half-brother named John.
