Joseph was born on December 14th, 1671 in Birkrigg Park.1  Joseph's father was Robert Atkinson and his mother was Jane Hastwhittle.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Atkinson and Agnes. He had a sister named Margaret.  He was the older of the two children. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named David, Amos, Samuel, Emmanuel, Agnes, Hannah and Rachel.
