Edward was born in March 1848 in Edgworth.1  Edward's father was John Allen and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ann Brambley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Richard, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Alice, Alice and Sarah. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
