Charles was born on January 21st, 1921 in Liverpool.1   Charles' father was William Alfred George Atkins and his mother was Adelaide Tickle.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Arthur Atkins and Albertina Amelia Lowe; his maternal grandparents were Charles Tickle and Sarah Poole. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Sarah, Mabel and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
