Gustine was born on November 6th, 1864 in Nemaha County, Nebraska.  Gustine's father was Johann Heinrich Sodman and her mother was Marie Joh. Christ. Dedarika Kai.  Her paternal grandparents were Johann Christoph Sothman and Hanna Sophie Schumacher; her maternal grandparents were Christoph Kai and Maria Loojen. She had two brothers named Christoph and Johann.  She was the youngest of the three children.  She died at the age of 79 on July 31st, 1944 in St. Francis, Cheyenne County, Kansas.

Gustine and Fredrich were married in a religious ceremony on February 22nd, 1884.
