F. was born on February 25th, 1878 in Monticello, Jones County, Iowa.¹ F.'s father was William Richard Null and his mother was Ette Catharina Frerichs. His maternal grandparents were Folkert Frerichs and Gretje Jürgens Schmidt. He had six brothers and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Frank, J., Gerhard, George, William, Albert, Margaretha, Katharine, Etta, Lilian and K. He was the third oldest of the twelve children.
