Herta was born on 17-Mar-1933 in Trossen.  Herta's father was Max Smollich and her mother was Martha Olschewski.  Her paternal grandparents were Friedrich Smollich and Henriette Fiedrich.  She was the youngest of two children.  She had a sister named Waltraud.
