Julia was born on March 29th, 1831 in Berhampore, West Bengal, India and her baptism took place there on June 21st, 1831.  Julia's father was Mr Edward Townsend and her mother was Mrs Maria Stack ?. She had two sisters named Amelia and Sophia.  She was the youngest of the three children. She had five half-sisters named Sarah, Anne, Margaret, Elizabeth and Catherine.
