Amelia was born on April 8th, 1826 in Berhampore, West Bengal, India and her baptism took place there on May 1st, 1826.  Amelia's father was Mr Edward Townsend and her mother was Mrs Maria Stack ?. She had two sisters named Sophia and Julia.  She was the oldest of the three children. She had five half-sisters named Sarah, Anne, Margaret, Elizabeth and Catherine.
