Walter was born on February 2nd, 1869 in Simla, Himachal Pradesh, India and his baptism took place there on May 31st, 1869.  Walter's father was Mr William Thorpe and his mother was Mrs Adeline Eleanor Augusta Macleod.  His paternal grandparents were Mr David Brannon Thorpe and Mrs Caroline Matilda Turner; his maternal grandparents were Mr Donald Macleod and Mrs Ann Catherine Heron. He had two brothers named Arthur and Edward.  He was the oldest of the three children.
