Arthur was born on April 19th, 1870 in Simla, Himachal Pradesh, India and his baptism took place there on September 23rd, 1870.  Arthur's father was Mr William Thorpe and his mother was Mrs Adeline Eleanor Augusta Macleod.  His paternal grandparents were Mr David Brannon Thorpe and Mrs Caroline Matilda Turner; his maternal grandparents were Mr Donald Macleod and Mrs Ann Catherine Heron. He had two brothers named Walter and Edward.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
