    Attestation Papers AMD157/42: Unlimited Service, Enlisted Rochester, 25th Feb 1846 at 10am for 3 pounds 17 shilings and 6 pence. Aged 18, Occupation Farmers Labourer, Born of the parish of Harlow, near Bishops Stortford, Essex.
    
    Discription: Aged 18, Hight 5ft 6 inches, Complexion Sallow, Eyes Hazel, Hair, Brown, no distinctive marks.
    
    Officer comments on 3rd page:
    Run 2nd Aug 1848 from Ganges (cannot read the rest).
    at the top it reads Gaol by Dist Ct Mtl 84 days. (very faint).
    Also reads (faintly) Age 19 years 10 months, service 1-10, Character? Good. There is no record of service shown.
    
    From H.M.S. Ganges Log Book (National Archives):
    Remarks on Wednesday 2nd of August 1848, 10am 'William Collar deserted, took with him one side belt and one breast plate.'
    
    He is listed on the deserter page of the same book. It reads:
    Entry 25th March 1848, from Chatham, Born Harlow, Essex, Age 20, Chatham Division, 41st Company, Wm Collar, Private (3rd Class) desterted 13th July 1848 from Sheerness, (list of naval slops and a discription).
    
    From the book section 'Marines 3rd Class':
    Date of Will/Cert of Seaman Gunners: 2nd May 47 (from Run?), (An entry/apperance, I dont understand this bit, dated 25th March 1848), Pressed/Volunteer/Private Book (just says Chatham), Born Harlow, Essex, aged 20 on ship, Number 41, Named Wm Collar, Private 3rd Class. States next to date and discharge 'R 13th July 1848.
    
    On the opposite page is states: 'Whether their discharge was with original entry and charge' (is written Sheerness). Naval Slops 5.15.6 (head quarters written in red next to entry) 1.8.11 written in black. Taken 3 pouches of Tobacco and 1/6 bars of soap. When Musterd: (x 14 July 1848 Sheerness). Number of Days Bore: 34.
    
    We cannot find him in any census after 1841...
