Karolus was born on October 28th, 1820 in Houthalen. Karolus' father was Henricus Bernardus Gaethofs and his mother was Marie Agnes Raymakers. His paternal grandparents were Antoine Marc Gaethofs and Anna Michiels; his maternal grandparents were Charles Raymakers and Marie Odille Corthouts. He had a brother named Jean Michael. He was the younger of the two sons. He died at the age of 67 on March 30th, 1888 in Lommel.¹
