Josephus was born on December 25th, 1864 in Beringen.¹ Josephus' father was Victor Gaethofs and his mother was Philomène Thoelen. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Gaethofs and Maria Theresia Lambriechts. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Jean Pierre, Pierre Joseph, Guillaume, Marie Rosalie Anne, Hélène and Hubertine Rosalie. He was the oldest of the seven children.
