Josephus was born on December 25th, 1864 in Beringen.¹ Josephus' father was Victor Gaethofs and his mother was Philomène Thoelen. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Gaethofs and Maria Theresia Lambriechts. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Jean Pierre, Pierre Joseph, Guillaume, Louis, Marie Rosalie Anne, Hélène, Hubertine Rosalie and Marie Augustine. He was the oldest of the nine children.
