Hélène was born on December 5th, 1870 in Luik.¹ Hélène's father was Victor Gaethofs and her mother was Philomène Thoelen. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Gaethofs and Maria Theresia Lambriechts. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Josephus, Jean Pierre, Pierre Joseph, Guillaume, Louis, Marie Rosalie Anne, Hubertine Rosalie and Marie Augustine. She was the third oldest of the nine children.
