Joannes was born on September 13th, 1771 in Heusden.¹   Joannes' father was Andreas  Gathofs and his mother was Helena Buntiens.  His paternal grandparents were Arnoldus (Jacobus) Gathoffs and Aleidis Schoppen; his maternal grandparents were Joannes Bintiens and Elizabetha Iven. He had two sisters named Anne Elisabeth and Anna Marie.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named Arnoldus and Joannes.
