George was born in 1828 in Bishops Waltham.  George's father was James Horner and his mother was Charlotte Stone.  His paternal grandparents were James Horner and Mary; his maternal grandparents were Edward Stone and Sarah. He had five brothers and five sisters, named James, John, Henry, Charles, William, Charlotte, Maria, Ann, Charlotte and Sarah.  He is the tenth oldest of the eleven children. He has a half-brother named William.
