William was born in 1845.  William's father was Charles of_Hesse and his mother was Elizabeth of_Prussia.  His paternal grandparents were Louis_II of_Hesse and_the_Rhine and Wilhelmina of_Baden; his maternal grandfather was William of_Prussia.  He was the youngest of four children.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Louis_IV of_Hesse, Henry and Anna.  He died at the age of 55 in 1900.
