Charles was born in 1781.  Charles' father was Frederick William_II and his mother was Frederica of_Hesse- Darmstadt.  His paternal grandparents were Augustus William and Louise of_Brunswick; his maternal grandparents were Ludwig_IX of_Hesse- Darmstadt and Caroline of_Zweibrucken.  He was the sixth of eight children.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named Frederick William_III, Louis, William, Son Stillborn, Christine, Wilhelmina and Augusta.  He had a half-sister named Frederica Charlotte of_Prussia.  He died at the age of 65 in 1846.
