Alexander was born in 1846.  Alexander's father was Alexander Tolmie and his mother was Elizabeth Gollan.  His paternal grandparents were James Tolmie and Jane Mackenzie; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Gollan and Ann Maclean. He had two sisters named Isabella and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
