Edward was born in 1891.  Edward's father was Alfred Rowbottom and his mother was Martha Hancock.  His paternal grandparents were James Rowbottom and Jane Pattrick; his maternal grandparents were William Hancock and Hannah. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, Alfred, Roland, Hannah, Lucy, Elsie, Hilda, Evelyn and Elizabeth.
