Wilhelm was born on May 13th, 1821 in Kackenberg, Germany.  Wilhelm's father was Johann Martin Helsper and his mother was Catharina Hoen.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Martin Helsper and Eva Heidrig.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named Martin, Johann Ludwig, Anna Maria, Eva, Margarethe and Katharina.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
