John Hedley was born about 1877 in Cleator Moor, Cumberland.  John Hedley's father was Emmanuel Tyacke Vincent and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Roberts.  He has three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Francis Newton, Robert Kempthorne, Priscilla and Annie.  He is the third oldest of the six children.  He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Emmanuel, Joseph, Edgar, Hannah and Emily.
