Merwin was born on April 28th, 1948.  Merwin's father is Otho Spears and his mother is Bernice Rhea Beardin (Spears).  His maternal grandparents were Frank Acel Beardin and Mary Alice Williamson (Beardin). He had three brothers and a sister, named Ronald, DeWayne, Carl and Nadine.  He is the second youngest of the five children.
