Rachel was born on August 18th, 1908. Rachel's father was Simon Petrus van Blerck and her mother was Maria Wilhelmina Joubert. Her paternal grandparents were Siemon (Paatjie) Petrus van Blerck and Jacomina Hendrina Louw. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Simon, Jan, Sarah , Jacomina, Maria, van Blerk and Hester. She is the second youngest of the eight children.
