J was born on May 12th, 1862.  J's father was Francois Petrus van Blerk and his mother was Cornelia Barendina Johanna Vorster.  His paternal grandfather was Petrus Jacobus van Blerk and his paternal grandmother is Maria Susanna Joubert. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Piet, Berend, Oupa Hendrik, Carel, Jan, Frank, Izak , Elizabeth, Magdalena, S, Unknown and Anna.  He was the fifth youngest of the thirteen children.
