Denis was born on February 2nd, 1933. Denis' father was Raymond Basil van Blerk and his mother was Louie Eleanor. His paternal grandfather was Bastiaan Rozier William van Blerk. He had a sister named Daphne. He was the younger of the two children.

- Sailed to Southampton in 1936 on Llandaaff Castle Ship from Durban.
  Married in England on 6 January 196 and then moved to Canada where they remained to their passing.
