Carolina was born on March 11th, 1810.  Carolina's father was Rogier Bernhadus van Blerk and her mother was Martha Basina Dorothea.  Her paternal grandfather was Rogier Bernhadus van Blerk and her paternal grandmother is Hilletjie Giebelaar. She had four brothers and eight sisters, named Johannes, Frederik , Marthinus, Bastiaan, Alida, Hendrik, Louisa, Hester , Orgina, Johanna, Wilhelmina and Rosina.  She is the seventh oldest of the thirteen children.
