James was born on January 8th, 1714.  James' father was Edward T Shepherd and his mother was Avarilla.  His paternal grandfather was Walter Shepherd and his paternal grandmother is Elspet Pirie. He had two brothers and a sister, named George, Michael and Jean.  He was the oldest of the four children.
