Willem ALBERTS

Willem was born on December 1st, 1857. Willem's father was Markus ALBERTS and his mother was Annechien EMMENS. His paternal grandparents were Harm ALBERTS and Zwaantien WILLEMS EEFTING; his maternal grandparents are Willem EMMENS and Antje BAKKER. He had three brothers and a sister, named Harm, Albert, Wolter and Zwaantien. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 72 on December 29th, 1929.

  Willem was a labourer who dug peat from early morning until 2.00 pm and then dug sand which he sold for 5 cents per wheelbarrow. He managed to make enough money to build himself a farmhouse where his two sons were born.
  
  When their sons showed no interest in farming, they sold the farmhouse and started a small shop across the road from the Army barracks, where they sold tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, sweets and wooden shoes.
  
  The farmhouse and shop have been demolished to make way for wider access roads to Assen.
