Johann Philipp was born on September 29th, 1790 in Enkirch and his baptism took place there on October 3rd, 1790.  Johann Philipp's father was Johann Philipp Lauff and his mother was Anna Maria Hill.  His paternal grandparents were Johann "Peter" Lauff and Maria Elisabetha Creutzer. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Johann Ludwig, Philipp Peter, Anna Maria, Maria Elisabetha and Maria Catharina.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
