Richard was born in September 1797.  Richard's father was Richard Staple and his mother was Grace Jose.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Staple and Hannah Sadler. He had four brothers and a sister, named Martin, Henry, Richard, Jeremiah and Betsy.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 8 in 1805.
