Peter was born in May 1804.  Peter's father was John Skewes and his mother was Ann Dennis.  His paternal grandparents were Martin Skewes and Mary Polkinghorne. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Betsy and Jennifer.  He was the oldest of the four children.
