John was born in 1716.  John's father was Richard Skewes and his mother was Mary James.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Skewes and Bridget Williams. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Henry, Peter and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Richard, Jane and Ursula.
