His paternal grandfather was Capitão Donatário João Soares de Albergaria and his paternal grandmother is Branca de Sousa Falção; his maternal grandparents are Francisco da Cunha de Albuquerque and Brites da Camara. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Pedro Soares de, Nuno da Cunha Soares de Sousa, Simão Soares de, Joana Soares de, Maria Soares de and Leonor Soares de. He is the third youngest of the seven children. He has six half-brothers and a half-sister, named Miguel, Belchior de Sousa, Gonçalo, André de, Rui de, Álvaro de and Cecília de.-
