Jane was born about 1839 in Spaunton, (Rosedale West), N. Yorkshire.1   Jane's father was William Newby and her mother was Sarah Unknown (= William Newby). She had two brothers and three sisters, named William Goodwill, Watson, Emma, Mary and Lavinia.
