Ruth was born in 1767 and her baptism took place on December 13th, 1767 in St James Church, Taunton, Somerset, UK. Ruth's father was Thomas Hill and her mother was Mary Thomas.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Hill and Hannah Goldsworthy. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Henry, Jonathan, Mary, Ann and Leah.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
