Donald was born in 1868.  Donald's father was Andrew Mowat and his mother was Elizabeth Reid.  His paternal grandparents were John Mowat and Barbara MacKay.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Andrew, Hugh, Hughina, Barbara, Elizabeth, Jessie and Catherine.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
