William was born in 1885.  William's father is James Manson and his mother is Isabella Smith.  His paternal grandparents are William Manson and Maria MacKay; his maternal grandparents are Nichol Smith and Catherine Banks.  He has a brother and three sisters, named James, Catherine, Maria and Elizabeth.  He is the fourth oldest of the five children.
